When using the SendMail Restricted SHell (smrsh) for mailing to programs, the programs themselves, or symbolic links to the programs, must be placed in /etc/smrsh.

Example error message in maillog:

  • maillog output:
Nov 14 08:56:15 host smrsh: uid 8: attempt to use "email2ipage hutchib" (stat failed)
Nov 14 08:56:15 host sendmail[1460]: mAEEuFpe001459: to="|/etc/mail/email2ipage hutchib";, ctladdr=<hutchib.pager@example.com> (8/0), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=prog, pri=30559, dsn=5.0.0, stat=Service unavailable

After creating a symbolic link in /etc/smrsh to the script, the program mailer works.
